CO2 Laser
Fractional carbon dioxide laser resurfacing is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat a wide array of skin concerns including areas of skin discoloration, skin texture, fine or deep lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, keloids and hypertrophic scars, stretch marks, uneven pigment, and other signs of skin aging.
Our CO2 laser works by emitting powerful pulses of infrared carbon dioxide laser beams that penetrate the top layers of skin reaching into the dermis. This process creates microscopic areas of thermal damage that stimulate new collagen production and replace the damaged surface skin with new, healthy skin cells as the treated area heals.
A topical or local anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area prior to the procedure to ensure optimal comfort. At Fora Dermatology, we also offer Pronox, a patient administered nitrous oxide delivery system designed to make procedures easier to tolerate. This system administers 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen and is a proven method of relieving anxiety and pain. It is fully controlled by the patient and once finished, the gas is out of the patient's system in approximately 5 minutes with no residual effects.
The downtime following CO2 laser can be upwards of 2 weeks. It is extremely important to follow all post-treatment instructions to ensure the best possible results. It is common for patients to experience swelling, redness, itching, and a mild sunburn like effect for the first 7 days following treatment. As your newly formed skin will be very sensitive, we highly recommend avoiding sun exposure and any harsh irritants for the first few months following your treatment!
CO2 lasers are typically administered in a single treatment session, although multiple treatments spaced, 3 to 6 months apart, may be necessary for some conditions. The treatment should only be administered by a trained and experienced dermatology provider, as improper use can lead to side effects such as burns, hyperpigmentation, and scarring. If you are considering a CO2 laser as a treatment option, it is recommended to have a consultation with your dermatology provider to determine if this is the right choice for you!
