Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and is mainly due to sun-exposure. Those individuals with a fair complexion, history of sun-exposure, family history of skin cancer, and those with low immunity are susceptible.

At Fora Dermatology we specialize in full body skin cancer screening. Our dermatology providers will screen you from head to toe using their clinical skills and tools such as the dermatoscope (a polarized light scope) to assess your moles, birth-marks, and growths. Their expert eye will be able to spot skin cancer or precancerous lesions.

The provider may biopsy, treat, freeze, remove, or choose to photograph lesions of interest. Many times the lesions that the patient is concerned about are not necessarily the most worrisome lesions so a full and thorough skin examination is warranted.

To help prepare for your skin cancer screening please:

  1. Do not wear makeup (or remove makeup) prior to the exam. Make-up may cover skin lesions or make them hard to recognize.

  2. Bring your previous records to the visit (pathology reports, treatment records, etc) so we can place in your chart and to help us in providing you the best care possible.

  3. Bring a medication list if you take any medications.

  4. Wear loose fitting clothing to help with the exam or to easily undress for a full skin exam

  5. Come on time for your appointment so we can make the most out of your visit

  6. Bring a list of your concerns so that you don’t forget anything

  7. Bring a positive attitude and hope for the best!

Some patients need skin exams every three months (history of melanoma or other aggressive skin cancers), six months, yearly, or every few years. Your dermatology provider will recommend the best time frame for future skin exams.
